🏭 Synthetic — Petroleum-derived polymer

Polyester is the dominant global fibre, accounting for over 52% of all fibre production. A thermoplastic polymer (polyethylene terephthalate), it is melt-spun into filaments or staple fibre. Warp

The longitudinal yarns held under tension on a loom, running the full length of the fabric. The warp forms the structural skeleton of any woven textile and determines much of its dimensional stability.

Weft

The transverse yarns woven over and under the warp threads. Also called fill or filling yarn. Weft insertion speed is a primary determinant of loom productivity and fabric width.

GSM

Grams per square metre — the universal measure of fabric weight. Lighter fabrics (80–120 GSM) are sheer or light-weight; heavier weights (300+ GSM) are used for upholstery, denim, and outerwear.

Selvedge

The self-finished edge of a fabric that prevents unravelling. Shuttle-loom selvedge denim — woven at 38 inches on vintage machines — is prized for its clean edge and superior density.

Mordant

A metallic salt (alum, iron, tannin, copper) that chemically bonds dye molecules to fibre, improving colourfastness and enabling a wider palette of achievable hues in natural dyeing traditions.

Hand Feel

The tactile properties of a fabric assessed by touch — softness, smoothness, drape, body, and prickle. Hand feel is the primary sensory attribute in garment specification and buyer approval.

Twill

A weave structure where weft threads pass over and under warp threads in a progressive offset, producing a characteristic diagonal rib. Denim, herringbone, and gabardine are all twill-weave fabrics.

Scouring

The wet-processing stage that removes natural impurities (waxes, oils, pectin, protein) from raw fibre before dyeing. Effective scouring is critical to achieving level, reproducible colour results.

Mercerising

A finishing process using caustic soda (NaOH) under tension that swells cotton fibres, increasing their lustre, dye uptake, and tensile strength by approximately 10–25%.
